Description: Naming Joel Hinman (b. 1802 Southbury / New Haven County) to State Supreme Court. Hinman continued from this appointment in 1842 to 1861, when he became Chief Justice. Signed by Secretary of State Noah A. Phelps (key at the capture of Ticonderoga / Revolutionary War) & Governor Chauncey F. (Fitch) Cleveland. Cleveland was admitted to the bar in 1819, State’s Attorney in 1832, State Bank Commissioner in 1838 & served a total of ten non consecutive stints in the House of Representatives over two and a half decades. He was elected Connecticut’s 31st Governor on May 4th, 1842 serving to May 1st, 1844 when he returned to private practice in Hampton. In 1849 he returned to the House, serving until 1853 and again in 1863 & 1866. Dated May 27, 1842 this document is only three weeks into Cleveland’s term as Governor & documents Hinman’s entry to a court he would serve not only decades but through the Civil War. Document is entirely split at center seam w/ tears along other folds & wrinkles. Toning is consistent, foxing to state seal from original glue. The word Hinman is circled & Cleveland underlined in later pencil. Conservation should not be particularly difficult or costly, the paper remains supple & complete. 10.75 x 16”.
