Description: 1850 circa Original Leather and Gilt Lion, Peacock, Owl, Dog, Bees, Book Covers Front & Back NO Spine These striking brown calf and gilt decorated book covers are likely from an elaborately bound Curtis Botanical Magazine, or other such small natural history publication of 1790-1850. They show a highly decorative and detailed gilt pattern of owls, peacocks, herons, roosters, lions, snakes, monkeys, bees and even mans friend, the dog. The gilding work is very fine and the condition good with a few scratches on the cover as shown.Each separate binding measures about 9 1/2 inches long by 5 1/2 inches wide and there is NO spine, just the front and back covers. There are no prints included.These covers provide an amazing start for a journal or other inventive project for the hobbyist! Spotted or foxing is also common due to age and handling over a long period of time and while a small degree of foxing is common and acceptable, we avoid extensively foxed prints. 4. Book covers may have chips, stains, corner imperfections or spine damage and color lightening or changes. If the prints are very large large we very carefully roll them with several protective layers into a strong tube. They roll out flat very quickly.
