The obverse of the coin features Lady Liberty, as she was modeled by Miss Anna Willess Williams, a school teacher from Philadelphia. Liberty is shown wearing a coronet with the inscription "Liberty" with a Phrygian cap on her head. The reverse heraldic eagle was not readily accepted by the public due to a more diminutive build. Morgans were sometimes referred to as "Buzzard Dollars" because of the reverse image.
