1968 68 Ford Mustang Shelby Cougar AM Car Radio 8TPZ Philco Works, Tuning Slips

Description: Here we have a nice, original 1968 Ford Mustang/Shelby/Cougar AM car radio less knobs. Part number for this radio reads 8TPZ and it was made by Philco. The original Philco inspection sticker is still attached to the top. This radio is the same as the 1969-70 models except it has shorter volume/tone control shafts. Radio has been bench and does work well. The antenna trimmer was adjusted while bench testing but should be readjusted once hooked up to the car's antenna. Tone control works properly. The volume/tone control pot was sprayed with electronics cleaner. Pushbuttons work very smoothly and set stations properly. All pushbuttons have been cleaned. The issue with this radio is that the tuning slips. That's because part of the tuning clutch assembly has a metal disc that has come loose from the clutch assembly. In looking at the last photo you will see this loose disc just to the right of the nylon tuning gear. It should be attached to the clutch assembly on the right and the tuning gear on the left. This "dissociation" occurs when the rubber clutch disc seizes from non-use. Then the pushbuttons no longer push in to select a station. If someone presses too hard on a pushbutton this metal disc breaks free rather than the clutch disc disengaging. I've seen people have some success using JB Weld to glue the metal disc back in place but I haven't had any luck doing that myself. Buyer can make that decision. The power/dial light connector is intact but the speaker connector has been cut off. Dial indicator is very bright in color (just repainted) and the dial light is functional (new green LED bulb installed). The plastic dial lens is in very nice condition. The face has been lightly polished and is very clear. Dial numbering is still very bright. The silver strip above the pushbuttons shows minimal wear so I opted not to repaint it. The radio casing is clean with no rust issues. The inside has been blown free of any dust and loose debris. This will make for a very nice looking, correct unit for your early Mustang/Shelby/Cougar restoration project. Repair or use as-is. I will have, or currently have, other Mustang/Falcon/misc. radios in varying condition for sale.
