Incorporated in Colorado in 1880 as the Mexican National Railway and at first affiliated with the Denver & Rio Grande Railway, it completed a narrow-gauge main line from Mexico City to Laredo in September 1888. The company was reincorporated again in Utah in 1902 as the National Railroad of Mexico, and completed a standard-gauge main line in 1903. The NdM subsequently acquired three narrow gauge companies in central Mexico. Following privatization in the 1990s, the NdM formed the majority of "Transportacion Ferroviaria Mexicana", now the Kansas City Southern de Mexico.
