Each lot contains several stones of 1/2 pound or larger, of random shapes, enabling you to get multiple slabs and cabochons from each stone. As with most raw materials, some stones may have some natural fracturing. This is a natural, unprocessed material, so colors, sizes and shapes of the stones you will receive will vary from the stones pictured. We are unable to fulfill requests for size, shape or color. Montana Agates are the State Gemstone of Montana. Montana Agate is a gorgeous stone that is found in the Flaxville alluvial gravel bars of the Yellowstone River and a few of its tributaries. It originally was discovered in the area that is now Yellowstone National Park, but can be found throughout the alluvial deposits of the Yellowstone River all the way north through Wyoming and into North Dakota, where the headwaters of the River begins at the confluence with the Missouri River just south of Williston. The highest concentrations of Montana Agates are in Montana, however, hence the name. Montana Agates are nodules of microcrystalline silica deposits that formed in pockets or holes (called vugs) in the Volcanic rock of the Absaroka Mountain Range. They erode out of the cliffs into the river where they accumulate in the slower moving water along the gravel bars. The nodules typically have a greyish skin of silicified volcanic ash that encases a transparent or translucent chalcedony nodule with wonderful patterns of colored mineral inclusions. Typically the inclusions are banding, and spots, but dendrites, and the more rare fern-like dendrites are found but less common. The chalcedony nodule varies from light yellow to grey blue to clear with embedded brownish red to black inclusions. The reds, browns and oranges are the result of iron oxides, while the blacks and dark browns are due to manganese oxide. The most famous and also most valuable Montana Agates are called Dendritic Agates or Moss Agates because of the rare deep green fern or tree shaped inclusions contained in them.
