Description: "A New and Accurate Map of the World". World Map Print. John Speed 1651. New condition. This superb reproduction of the original antique hand colored copperplate engraved map of “A New and Accurate Map of the World” was published by John Speed circa 1651. This landmark world map was the seminal chart in the first atlas published by an Englishman. It is also one of the earliest maps to depict California as an island and also showing the settlement of New Plymouth in America. This detailed revision highlights the geographical fallacies that plagued geographers of the time including representations of California as an island, a great unknown southern continent “Terra Incognito”, a distorted Northwestern coast of America and a largely uncharted polynesia. The map includes celestial hemispheres, representations of Water, Earth, Air, and Fire, and celestial phenomena including solar and lunar eclipses. The portraits of early explorers include Sir Francis Drake, Ferdinand Magellan, Thomas Cavendish and Olivier van Noort.
