After the Antique, large patinated bronze sculpture of the Medici Venus

Description: After the Antique, patinated bronze sculpture of the Medici Venus. Italian, first quarter of the 20th century. Ferdinand de Luca foundry, with signature. Even brown patina, occasional pitting and oxidation, particularly to base. 23 ½ inches high The original sculpture, whose place of excavation is unknown, is first recorded as being in the Medici villa in Rome in 1638, and soon after was sent to Florence, where it remains in the Uffizi Gallery. Much admired and copied for centuries, the Medici Venus bears a striking resemblance to the Capitoline Venus, and it has been argued that both ultimately derive from copies made of a statue by the great Praxiteles in the 4th century BC. Copies of various sizes and quality abound, though often the dolphin (Venus was additionally a sea goddess), present in the casting offered here, is omitted.
