Description: This noble veteran from the 1700's is crafted of pine with heavy, hand-carved gesso and pastiglia decoration. Boasting a chunky cassetta profile with foliate arabesques carved in the field and raised classical moldings, it measures 16 1/2" x 20 1/4" overall with 11 5/8" x 15 3/8" reveal and 12 7/8" x 16 1/2" back rabbet opening. It has a generous 5/8" deep rabbet which has several early wooden spacers. The frame was reduced over 100 years ago, so only two corners retain the mortised splines and the resulting design is not perfectly symmetrical. Its surface is with layered gold finishes of grungy bronze powder, paint and a variety of metal leaf finishes evident. The frame is sturdy and usable with scattered chips/losses and retouch to the outer edges. The frame looks Italian to me...the back of the frame has 19th c. paper with printed text in Dutch.
