Description: This is one of my favorites because of the known history!! Antique engraving of Mrs. Peter Beckford (Louisa Beckford nee Pitt born in 1754) by Fred Bromley. The original portrait was painted by Joshua Reynolds and depicts Louisa, who was reportedly of a delicate constitution, making a libation (a drink-offering) to the Greek goddess of health, Hygeia, whose emblem was a snake. At the time the portrait was painted Louisa Beckford was having a passionate affair with her husband’s cousin, William Thomas Beckford (1760 - 1844). It is thought that the sittings were probably planned by an infatuated Louisa as a means of seeing William when he was in London. There is a description and note on the back in French with dates of 1773. 19h x 16w Disclaimer: Nothing major other than some light foxing to the engraving and minor chips that can be touched up to the frame.
