Australian Army Slouch Bush Hat Size 7 USAF Thunderbirds Wild Weasel Pilot 1968

Description: Original 1968 Royal Australian Infantry Corps slouch or bush hat given to Lt. Colonel Marion “Mack” Angel by the U.S. Army Attaché in Canberra, Australia. Lt. Colonel Angel was a Major and a member of the USAF “Thunderbirds” aerial demonstration team from 1967-1969 and it’s possible that the slouch hat was given to him during this period. The slouch hat is an “Akubra” brand slouch hat made by Dunkerley LTD. in Australia and features a pleated puggaree, leather chin strap, leather sweatband, a clip to attach the folded side of the brim to the crown, and a metal Royal Australian Infantry Corps badge. The slouch hat is size 7 (56 cm). A piece of paper with “Compliments of the United States Army Attaché Canberra” printed on it, and the handwritten name “Angel,” accompanies the hat. The hat is from the estate of retired USAF Lt. Colonel Marion "Mack" Angel (1937-2024), a distinguished fighter pilot who flew the F-100 Super Sabre, F-105 Thunderchief, and F-4E Phantom II. Lt. Colonel Angel flew 100 F-105 Wild Weasel combat missions “up north” during the Vietnam War. He was also a member of the USAF “Thunderbirds” aerial demonstration team from 1967-1969, flying the F-100 and F-4E in the Left Wing position (aircraft number 2). The slouch hat appears to be in excellent used condition with the exception of a broken leather chin strap and perhaps some very minor signs of wear and age, such as loose or frayed threads, wrinkles, scrapes, and abrasions on the leather chin strap and sweatband, very minor rub marks or abrasions on the underside of the brim and interior of the crown, oxidation and discoloration of parts of the metal buckles, and perhaps some dust in recessed areas. The Royal Australian Infantry Corps badge appears to be in excellent used condition, although it has not been removed from the hat for examination. The piece of paper from the U.S. Army Attaché in Canberra, Australia appears to be in fair to "good minus" used condition with signs of wear and age, such as fading, yellowing, wrinkles, creases, folds, discoloration, stains, scratches, scrapes, abrasions, spots, stray marks, rub marks, and wear to the printed text. It’s possible that some of these imperfections are a result of the manufacturing process. Please see photos, as they constitute part of the description.
