BEADED 1880s AMERICAN PLAINS INDIAN BUFFALO HIDE BEADED SHEATH/1841 DATED KNIFE

Description: BEADED 1880s AMERICAN PLAINS INDIAN BUFFALO HIDE BEADED SHEATH/1841 DATED KNIFE BEADED 1880s AMERICAN PLAINS INDIAN BUFFALO HIDE BEADED SHEATH/1841 DATED KNIFE ANTIQUE ORGINAL LARGE BEADED AMERICAN PLAINS NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN BUFFALO HIDE SHEATH WITH BEADED DROP / TIN CONES FIINAL / IN SUPERB CONDITION CIRCA 1880’s / WITH A SKINNING KNIFE DATED 1841 WITH PROVENANCE This is an authentic American Plains Indian beaded sheath on Indian tanned buffalo hide, circa 1880’s. This large size knife sheath is 10” long x 3 1/8 wide. The sheath front is fully beaded in 4 colors; light blue, red, yellow and dark blue beads that were imported from Europe (mostly from Czechoslovakia and Austria) and are considered “trade beads” such as Native American Indians trading hides to frontiersmen for decorative trinkets. Note these early style handmade small seed beads have very small variations with slightly uneven dimensions and size. The sheath is made from Indian tanned buffalo hide and is made from two identical pieces hand sewn together at the sides and the top front edge using sinew thread. The back side top of the sheath has sinew stitching with tiny knot ends. As is often found, the top hanging loop is a simple loop of rawhide with a short piece extending past the sheath hole to adjust the loop and tie it off. There are 2 different beaded panels on the sheath front that were hand sewn onto a piece of buffalo hide in 9 vertical rolls of rawhide sinew sewn “lazy stitch” fashion, i.e., short strings of beads vs. individual beads strung. The rows of beads are tightly sewn to the buffalo hide front, but with close examination with a jeweler’s loupe, a few of these sinew stitches can be seen that have multiple striations of the sinew that look lines miniature strands of thread. This top panel is decorated on a background of light blue beadwork with large V simulated arrowhead patterns in red beads with dark blue border edge embellishments. The center has two stylized crosses in red beads with yellow centers. All of these top panel beads are remarkably in intact, original condition. The bottom half of the sheath resembles the profile of a wide knife blade with a light blue beaded border. The interior bead work resembles a smaller profile of a blade shape, en suite, in red bead work. This red border has an inside border in the same shape in dark blue beadwork. The center panel is done with a yellow beaded background with four similar stylized cross patterns done in red beads with light blue centers. Remarkably, all of these bottom panel beads are in intact, original condition. The rare, decorative, round 12” long x 5/16” diameter drop (tassel) at the bottom of the sheath is made from a period braided cotton cord and embellished with sinew beaded work sewn in a candy-striped pattern with 2 small tin cones (Indian made from tin cans) at the end. Note there may or may not be 2 or 3 tiny beads missing on the round beaded drop. I believe all the beads are intact. However, upon close inspection, the number beads per strand and the spacing of the beads have shifted slightly over time as the sinew has dried and has very slightly rearranged the spacing of the beads. These beads can be repositioned for uniform spacing if desired, but everything is as found, untouched condition. Note that these old, beaded sheaths have probably sheathed several different knives in its lifetime; and American Indians would put any old knife in any old sheath. This skinning knife was commercially handmade and is a typical trade item. However, this knife was made prior to the sheath and was married to it and found in the sheath when discovered. Utilitarian items were passed down from generation to generation as long as the item was still functional. This extremely well used skinning knife has a crudely carved date of 1841 on the front wooden scale. This style knife was produced for, and used by trappers, frontiersmen, mountain men and settlers for many decades prior and after this date; and it would appear much more likely one of this group of men embellished his skinning knife with a specific year date that was significant for him. American Indians were mostly illiterate, and unlikely to carve a date into their knife. The ferrule of this knife also appears to have a crude frontier repair made from molten bullets used in cap & ball percussion firearms and shaped into a thick lead collar to repair / reinforce the blade and hilt. The knife could have been taken or bartered by an Indian from almost any number of possibilities. The blade is 11 5/8” overall with a thin 6 5/8” flexible blade made for skinning, with a 4 3/4" hilt. The blade has been used for a very long time and appears to have been sharpened on a rock or similar crude surface. There is untouched spots of spidering that takes a century + to form, along with blood pitting. The hardwood scales appear to be walnut slabs on an early style tang that narrows towards the open end and are secured with early style Iron pins. Overall, in untouched, as found condition decades ago, and this knife has been with this sheath for many decades. All, or almost all (see notes on the beaded drop) the beads are intact which makes this a premier piece in exceptional overall condition for its origin and extreme 130 - 145 age. Provenance: from an Iconic Bowie Knife / Western Americana / Native American California collection. Buyers must keep their PayPal account in good standing. Buyers must show good faith conduct with the seller. Improper good faith conduct can include, but is not limited to, any means by which a buyer can attempt to unjustly benefit from the Seller's Terms & conditions or eBay's Buyer Protection plan. Moreover, good faith conduct does not include buyer's remorse, regardless of the reason. Returns will not be accepted such as changed my mind, found a better price, just didn't like it, Ordered by mistake, Arrived too late, etc. Returns will not be accepted and buyers will be reported to eBay when buyer makesfalse claims such as doesn't match description or photos, doesn't seem authentic, Doesn't fit, Wrong item sent, Missing parts or pieces, Doesn't work or defective, Arrived damaged. By doing so, buyers commit to negotiate in good faith, and that they have not initiated any other form of resolution processing; including eBay / PayPal dispute process or credit card charge backs, or purchases where you have been or may be compensated by a third party. Possible buyer / seller resolution examples are: if seller and buyer agree that an item is significantly different than described and photographed, exchanging an item for a different item from the seller (whether listed or unlisted), credit from the seller against any current or future item, adjustment, trade, return, or any other arrangement that is mutually agreed upon between the seller and the buyer, and confirmed in writing via eBay's email system. These options are designed to expedite resolution of any potential issue quickly, easily and amicably, in lieu of eBay / PayPal on-line dispute resolution process which is lengthy, laborious, and allows decisions to be made by a 3rd party instead of the principals; i.e., the buyer & seller.
