Description: a quack medical device. The 1 1/8" diameter medallian is marked "Boyd's Battery", and on the reverse, "Jan 17, 1878, IMP 1879, LON ENG". The battery is composed of 12 peripheral disks of copper, brass, and white metal, surrounding a central copper rosette. Boyd's 1878 patent date makes it one of the earliest such quack medical devices, predating Richardson's battery by two years. The battery was worn around the neck, preferably over the heart.A reporter who visited J. C. Boyd’s laboratory in New York City mentioned “a secret method of amalgamating the metals used, which is the great reason of the powerful action of the battery upon the body, and this secret is known only to Prof. Boyd and some of his staff.” Boyd’s battery was allegedly patented on January 17, 1878, but the U.S. Patent Office did not issue patents on that date.
