John Burns survived the War of 1812 as a young man and later in life joined the Battle of Gettysburg as a civilian and fought (at nearly age 70) for the Union Army. He took up his flintlock musket and powder horn and fought with the 7th Wisconsin Infantry and then moved to join the 24th Michigan. He fought beside these men of the famous Iron Brigade, serving effectively as a sharpshooter. He received wounds in the arm, leg, and several minor cuts to the chest but amazingly survived.
