[Photos are from a personal copy.] John William Cheever, who lived from 1912 – 1982, was an American novelist and short story writer. His fiction is mostly set in Manhattan, or old New England villages around Quincy, Massachusetts, where he was born. He is "now recognized as one of the most important short fiction writers of the 20th century." His main themes include the duality of human nature: sometimes dramatized as the disparity between a character's decorous social persona and inner corruption, and sometimes as a conflict between two characters (often brothers) who embody the salient aspects of both – light and dark, flesh and spirit. "The Wapshot Chronicle" is the first novel about an eccentric family that lives in a Massachusetts fishing village. Published in 1957, it won the U.S. National Book Award. The novel is about the Wapshot family of St. Botolphs, a fictional river port in Massachusetts. The Wapshots trace their origins backs hundred of years but the family is reluctant to admit that they have seen better days---St. Botolps shipyards are no longer operating and the Wapshot family retains only shadows of its former wealth. The novel is the sometimes-humorous story of Leander Wapshot, his eccentric Aunt Honora---who now controls what is left of the Wapshot money--- and his sons, Moses and Coverly, as they all deal with life. The story is somewhat autobiographical, particularly regarding the character of Coverly, who, like Cheever, experiences feelings of bisexuality. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked "The Wapshot Chronicle" 63rd on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. 387 pages. I offer Combined shipping.
