Description: In a society where labor enjoyed a position of very high standing, it follows that East German authorities should have gone to considerable effort to reward good performances in the workplace. This award was presented by representatives of the East German state to exemplary workers. In 1988, more than 288,000 East Germans received this honor. The pin measures approximately 1 ¾ inches tall and slightly over 1 ¼ inches wide. It consists of a top bar with a pin on the reverse and a planchet connected by a ring. Both pieces are made of a gold color metal and red enamel with the symbol of the East Germany (GDR) on both. The back of the planchet is made with the text "AUF SOZIALISTISCHE ART ZU LEBEN, ERFORDERT AUF SOZIALISTISCHE ART ZU ARBEITEN". Translated into English, it reads: "LIVING IN A SOCIALIST WAY REQUIRES WORKING IN A SOCIALIST WAY". This particular example is in outstanding condition showing minimal age.
