Description: General Paul von Hindenburg became a national war hero in WW I by defeating the Russians in the East and winning several battles against the allies in the West. Turning to politics in 1925, he became the second President of the new German Republic. Under public pressure in 1933, however, he made the catastrophic mistake of appointing the popular Adolph Hitler as Chancellor, and later granting him emergency powers. When Hindenburg died in 1934, Hitler appointed himself Fuhrer and transformed the nation into a Nazi totalitarian state. Minted during the Nazi era, this coin presents von Hindenburg in a heroic mode, which is an interesting example of using coinage for political co-opting purposes.
