Description: German Empire, WW1, Original Grand Cross of the Iron Cross 1914,(Großkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes 1914). The Grand Cross of the Iron Cross was a decoration intended for victorious generals of the Prussian Army and its allies. It was the second highest class of the Iron Cross, following the Star of the Grand Cross of the Iron Cross, which was awarded only twice. Along with the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd Class, the Grand Cross was founded on 10 March 1813, during the Napoleonic Wars. It was renewed in 1870 for the Franco-Prussian War and again on 5 August 1914 for World War I. The Grand Cross of the Iron Cross was twice the size of the Iron Cross and was worn from a ribbon around the neck. There were five recipients of the 1914 Grand Cross in the First World War: Kaiser Wilhelm II, Paul von Hindenburg (later also awarded the Star of the Grand Cross of the Iron Cross), Erich Ludendorff, Prince Leopold of Bavaria, and August von Mackensen. Apart from awarded pieces, many period privately purchased or display pieces were made by companies such as Godet & Sohn Berlin, AWS Berlin, or C. F. Zimmermann Pforzheim. The specimen offered in this auction is a privately purchased piece from Weimar era (1919-1933) with multi-piece construction - two frame halves from cast silver and blackened cast iron core.The core is magnetic. Not marked but known variant of company C. F. Zimmermann, Pforzheim(this type was found in so called "Zimmermann hoard"). Very good condition, as seen on the pictures. The core blackening is partly worn off. The silver parts with a deep and even patina. The frame halves perfectly closed on all sides.
