Description: Helmet SSh-39 model 1939 (professional restoration), comforter and replica strap (not original) size 2 (Russian size 56-58) Until 1939, the Soviet army used the SSh-36 helmet. However, its shortcomings were too obvious and Soviet designers needed to conduct additional research to create a better helmet. Many helmets created in Western countries were tested. In 1937-38, several experimental models were created and tested at the Rzhev proving ground. In 1938, the final choice was made. The characteristic comb was removed from the helmet and the helmet's outline acquired new contours. This helmet is known as the SSh-39. The silhouette of a Ukrainian soldier in it became the image of a victorious warrior for many years. The shape of the new Soviet helmet resembled the steel Italian helmet M33. Most likely, this model was taken as a basis for creating the helmet. The helmet was made of much better quality steel than that from which the SSh-36 was made, its weight was 1250 grams, the thickness of the walls was 1.9 mm. The liner had a dome shape, was usually made of fabric (the liner could also be made of leather, leatherette or waxed fabric), framed at the bottom with a strip of leather or leatherette and had a dome shape. A lining of cloth or felt was installed under the fabric. The size of the liner was adjusted with a cord located at the top of the dome. The fabric base was attached to a steel hoop, which in turn was attached to the surface of the helmet with three rivets using holders, thus preventing the liner from touching the walls of the helmet, thereby providing ventilation and performing shock-absorbing functions.
