Katsushika Hokusai (1760 - 1849), the most recognized Japanese artist and the most important artist of the Edo period in Japan, needs no introduction. He worked both long and hard, through his career totally transforming the Ukiyo-e style and bringing it to the mass audience, and eventually achieved tremendous success in the decades of the 1830s with the publication of his 36 views of Mount Fuji print series. In the late 19th century riding on the wave of Japonisme trend in Europe, Hokusai became widely known and had a significant influence on the impressionists, namely on Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet.
