Description: For sale is a Very Large size Antique 1861-1863 34 Star CIVIL WAR ERA American flag. The 34-Star flag was adopted with the admission of Kansas as the 34th state in January 1861. It was used until 1863 when West Virginia became a state. This US flag would have been made during the early part of the Civil War. At no time did the national flag lose stars. The flag has individually sewn stars, A feature of old flags. It is made of a linen and wool type of material Since the United States believed that secession from the Union was illegal, the national flag during the Civil War continued to bear the stars of all the states of the Union, even the Southern states. The flag measures approximately 16’x11.5’. An enormous size that is rare to find. With such a long history behind it, the flag does have some losses to the material. There are quite a few minor holes, some corner repair patches and tears scattered here and there. See all photos (and zoom in) for detailed condition. Fortunately, the fabric of the flag is still in good integrity. Can be hung and displayed. It was acquired from a prestigious New England Americana auction. Some research suggests this was likely a Garrison flag due to it's size, others have suggested it was a naval vessel flag. The brass Grommets could have possibly been added at a later date as an attempted repair. Some civil War flags had brass rings sewn into the fabric.
