Description: Limoges Charger Plate LRL Hand Painted Game Birds Cock & Hen Artist Ourcq 1920's Limoges Charger Plate LRL Hand Painted Game Birds Cock & Hen Artist Ourcq 1920's A beautiful LIMOGES Charger Plate LRL (Lazeyras, Rosenfeld & Lehman) Hand Painted COCK & HEN GAME BIRDS artist Ourcq, circa 1920's Lazeyras, Rosenfeld & Lehman operated in 1906-1938 in Limoges, France. This decorating studio's artists painted figural or portrait subjects, game bird plates, and fish services for a very short time in the early 1920's. Their work is considered to be of very high quality, but not much is known about the history of the decorating studio. Their mark usually occurs without an accompanying white ware mark. In Mary Frank Gaston’s Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition, this is mark #3 and is circa 1920’s. The condition of this charger is excellent. We can find no defects. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, or hairlines. The gold appears to be as applied--highlighting the scalloped rim of the charger. The application of the gold is solid from the front and varies some on the side as you progress through the dips of the scalloping. We want to draw your attention to the area at the end of the hen's tail. There is a small scrape in the green wash color which seems to appear as the white decoration in the dark green below the cock. Please inspect the photos carefully. As collectors ourselves, we tend to be very picky. The artwork on this is beautiful with the proud cock standing guard over his hen nestled among the grasses. The artist was quite talented and the charger looks very beautiful with the yellow and green washes behind the game birds. Our French friend has identified this signature as "Ourcq" and supplied relevant information. "The OURCQ is a river which flows near Paris and brought water to the city tanks to the famous "Canal de l'Ourcq" (Ourcq channel), created by Napoleon Ist. OURCQ is even the name of a street and a subway station as well, in the north of Paris (19th district). The artist could have had links with that area." This stands 1 3/16" high and is 9 1/2" in diameter. In the last photo, you can see the factory drilled hole to be used for hanging the charger. Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description. The stand was used as a photo prop and is not part of this listing.
