NICE ANTIQUE GERMAN BLACK FOREST HAND CARVED EMIL SCHMECKENBECHER CUCKOO CLOCK!

Be sure to have a look at our other items!This is a very nice find of a rustic, working, antique, hand carved mechanical cuckoo clock that was created about 70 years ago in the Black Forest of Villingen, "Germany" by "Emil Schmeckenbecher," one of the finest clock makers in this region of the world. This is one of the earliest models of Emil's clocks I've ever seen and reminds me so much of the clock my father brought home after WWII. I always was the one who generally had the honor of winding the clock and I remember it to this day. This traditional clock is ornately detailed and a stunning, dark Mahogany finish. It's impressive in size too measuring about 12" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 5 1/2" at its deepest point, and about 9" at its widest point. The clock is carved the old world, high standard way from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. The clock front is designed to look like an intricate grape vine and adorned with five, nicely carved, wooden grape leaves and a vining branch too. There is a pretty, hand carved wooden bird with a shimmering blue eye at the very top of the case looking as though he's ready to take flight. The wooden dial has a black backdrop and features easy to read Roman numerals to mark the hours and a rare pair of matching, fancy, wooden hands to point out the time. The country origin, "Germany" appears in small block letters at the base of the dial. The back is wood too and is secured with a metal latch. It removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical weight driven movement created by "Regula" and bearing the Schmeckenbecher name and Germany point of origin. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The wooden bellow or whistle tubes are intact and the tops look good and make good sound. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small wooden door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current hour before going back inside the case and closing the door behind him; absolutely fascinating! The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, and cuckoos well too. But keep in mind this is an old clock, not a new one and it does work pretty well here for a 70 year-old clock but clocks do require maintenance. We don't know the service history but the movement does show signs of past service. Nonetheless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a fancy, carved wood grape leaf pendulum, and two heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. I’ve looked the clock over fairly well and find modest, light wear, no damage, and no missing parts. It is truly a breathtaking clock with a great old world look to it, and is just gorgeous on display! This clock is a wonderful look back at the greatness of Black Forest workmanship and is certain to capture the imagination of anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent, mechanical Black Forest timepiece with a solid history behind it.
