Description: Please review all pictures for overall condition and size, as this forms the overall condition/description of the item. Wear is consistent with age and use. In excellent condition overall. Has some paint loss/fading/ light rust, marks, scratches, minor chips in metal, etc. Original decorations and writing still visible. A previous owner started to repaint some of the decorations on the other side and thankfully stopped. It operates very well and smoothly. Binds down tightly. The gear shape under the handle makes us think it was possibly integrated into a process and possibly other machinery. There's also the cylindrical piece the looks to have a piece of wood in it that can be changed out. Works well on its own. Marked "PATENED MAY 3d & 10th 1859 BY S.P RUGGLES BOSTON MASS" S.P Ruggles was an inventor and the first person to invent an industrial job press, printing press. Ruggles wrote In 1830 or 1831 I invented and built, in New York, in Minors machine shop, the first card or job press, I believe, ever constructed in any part of the world. This press worked with a vibrating platen and was the first press ever contrived to receive, on its platen, the paper, or card to be printed." He invented a power job printing press machine. He contributed greatly to the progression of printing. An incredibly rare find and a nice piece of History. Full measurements are in the photos, it is a nice size. Overall about 17.5" long, 12" deep, 15.5" tall and weighs about 70 pounds. Closes to 3/4" and opens up to 2 7/8". Shipping is expensive, due to the size and insurance.
