When a Franciscan is asked, "How do Franciscans pray?" there are almost as many answers as there are Franciscans. Our Franciscan family has always allowed a great deal of personal freedom concerning styles. This book, however, answers that question thoroughly and from the sources of a wide range of classic Franciscan writers. The author begins by pointing out that mountains are usually climbed by using long "switchbacks" snaking back and forth to make the grade less steep. The "short cut" uses a straighter and more vertical line which is shorter but much steeper. He points out that this short cut is not easier and may be more dangerous, but it avoids the discouragement of taking a very long time. The nature of this short cut is the essence and heart of Franciscan spirituality: Holy Poverty. That is, the deeper and more complete is our detachment and surrender to Christ crucified, the more completely are we able to have God's Love poured into us. Lekeux goes on to explain that this detachment is cyclical in nature and focused on God's love. That is, on this path we do not enter into a dark and dry asceticism for long periods hoping for some far off reward, but rather we allow the infilling of Love to refresh and vivify our prayer. Love results in detachment as much as detachment invites love. Thus, this is a spirituality focused on joy and the delight of love which are the hallmarks of Francis' way.Lekeux also points out that the contemplative prayer of "Union" can and should be available in every time of meditation even in the earlier stages of the spiritual life. God wants us to rest in His silent Presence in deep awareness of His Love. These experiences are present from the very beginnings of our spiritual journey. They may be shorter at first, but before too long they grow to fill the time of prayer more fully. Other writers, such as De Guibert, have discouraged many from embarking on contemplative prayer by making it seem to be only for the ascetically severe and the farthest advanced. Lekeux counteracts this discouraging severity and invites everyone into the way of love and joy in the company of Lady Poverty. Each chapter presents a theme or aspect of this spiritual path introduced by the author, followed by a passage from a Franciscan writer on prayer. Lekeux draws upon classic writers such as Francisco de Ossuna (who gave Teresa of Avila her start) as well as lesser known writers. He provides an unparalleled view into the long and rich tradition of Franciscan prayer. This book is well written and accessible, clear and easy to read yet filled with classic references. It has been gathering dust in the back of many Franciscan libraries, but truly deserves to be brought out and re-read or given to those new to the Franciscan way of life. The book is Hard Cover in very good condition. It has no markings in the text. The binding is firm, the pages intact, the hinges are solid. No cracks or creases in the spine.
