Estate sale find, original vintage Grocery Store Young's Market Company Los Angeles CA Card Envelope 1930-40s. In 1888, John G. Young decided to open a retail store in downtown Los Angeles, marking the beginning of the Young’s Market Company. In 1906, all five Young brothers join the company, and it slowly began to develop into a prominent retail market chain in California. After the end of the prohibition, in 1933, Young’s Market Company still has the retail business but is starting to devote more energy towards the marketing of wine and liquor. In 1963, after the death of William G. Young, the last of the Young brothers, Vernon O. Underwood, Sr. takes on the role of President of the Young’s Market Company, starting to slowly spread the company’s operations, entering other states in the Western US like Hawaii, and much later in Oregon, Alaska and Washington. Since Young's had begun wholesaling liquor in the early 1930s, it had dealt with increasing conflict between the wholesale and retail sides of its business. Some of its wholesale customers were unhappy about doing business with a company that was competing directly against them on the retail level. In 1940, when Young's acquired a Dr Pepper franchise, it appeared that the time had come to choose between retail and wholesale. The company decided to give up its retail segment and focus exclusively on wholesaling wine, spirits, and food. It quickly set about selling its chain of neighborhood stores, which by that time numbered 60. In May 1940, the company closed the doors of its famous headquarters store at 7th and Union. Under the guidance of Vernon O. Underwood, Sr., they expanded their business, and after his death, the Underwood family bought out all the shareholders, becoming a completely family-owned company. In 1990, Vernon O. Underwood, Jr. discontinued all other branches of the company, focusing specifically on wine and spirits.
