Built by General Harrison in 1813, Fort Meigs was besieged unsuccessfully by the British and their Indian allies through-out the spring and summer of that year. So Impregnable was the stronghold that became known as the “Gibraltar of the Northwest”. Remnants of original earthworks can still be seen. The monument is situated in a 42-acre park which provides picnic facilities.
