Highly decorated he is one of few Boardfunker's to be awarded the Knights Cross. Willy Tscherning was born June 15, 1917. He began His military career on his birthday in 1936 when He joined the Luftwaffe Air signal Corps in Dresden from which he graduated as a Boardfunker (Radio Operator) and was assigned to 1./KG4 (General Wever) on January 1, 1938. Flying as a member of the 3. Staffel, Tscherning fought in the Polish campaign in September 1939. Followed by the Battle of France. He also flew Missions during the Battle of Britain, Until transferred to the East to take part in the Invasion of the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941. During service on the Ost front, He was awarded the Ehrenpokal (Honor Cup) on February 9, 1942 followed by the Deutsche Kreuz in Gold on August 21, 1942. During 1943 while serving in III./KG1 (Hindenberg) in the 9. Staffel, Tscherning flew hundreds of missions against the Russians, leading to the award of the Ritterkreuz (Knights Cross) on November 18, 1944 at the rank of Oberfeldwebel. On January 1, 1945 He was assigned to Ersatz-Kampfgeschwader 2, Where he served until surrendering to the Americans on May 5, 1945. Willy was a guest of the Americans until release on May 1, 1946.
