Description: WW1 (1918) British 'HALF SHEET' MAP (PROVISIONAL EDITION) for SHEET 36D (EASTERN HALF). Survey date 9/7/18.This was a specially produced map based on the Eastern Half of a 40,000 Scale Sheet 36D, but it may need some research in order to ascertain precisely why it was commissioned. There are some overprinted details in the top right corner (see photos) which clearly look like organised trenches but there is no key explaining what they represent. Perhaps the map was never completed, but it was certainly retained by the GSGS MAP ROOM as there is an ink stamp dated 2nd August 1918 at the bottom. As it's marked 'PROVISIONAL EDITION' there's every chance that this may have been a precursor to a finalised Edition and therefore quite an interesting map in terms of recording the processes throughout the production process.Measures 60cm x 44cm.In addition to the GSGS ink stamp, there is a raised museum logo stamp (with archive serial number) at the top and it has been kept in excellent condition as explained below.... This map is one of many acquired from a private collection which was previously purchased in 2002 from The Imperial War Museum. Each item was held in the museum's duplicate archives and deemed surplus. Almost all have IWM stock numbers or stamps etc and many have been linen backed for long term conservation and storage purposes. Significant numbers were unused surplus stock when originally transferred to the museum and have never even been folded. As such, many of these original WW1 maps are in 'time capsule' condition, and there are numerous 'Secret' or 'Confidential' maps relating to major battles amongst them. I will be working my way through the collection in due course. POSTAGE - Will be sent rolled in a brand new cardboard postal tube.
